Slots are where UK regulation has moved fastest, and where the gap between what players assume and what the rules say is widest.

On top of that, since October 2021: no autoplay on slots, a minimum spin duration of 2.5 seconds, no features that speed up play, and no sounds or visuals that celebrate a return smaller than the stake. That last one sounds minor and is not — the losses-disguised-as-wins effect was a deliberate design pattern for years.

None of this varies between licensed operators. It is the product, not a selling point.

RTP and volatility do different jobs

RTP describes the long-run share of stakes returned. Volatility describes how unevenly it comes back. Both are needed to say anything useful, and most comparisons quote only the first.

A 96% slot with low volatility pays small amounts often. A 96% slot with high volatility pays almost nothing for long stretches, then occasionally a great deal. Over millions of spins they return the same share; over one evening with a fixed bankroll they behave like different products entirely.

The practical consequence: a high-volatility game needs a bankroll that survives the dry stretch, or the session ends before the mathematics has room to work.

The same slot is not always the same slot

A number of games ship in more than one RTP build — 96.x, 94.x, sometimes lower — and the operator chooses which to run. This is legal, it is disclosed in the game info, and almost nobody reads it.

It is also the single most useful thing to check before playing a particular title at a particular site, and it takes about ten seconds. The figure quoted on a comparison page, including this one, is not binding; the one in the game info at the operator is.

Free play, and what it shows

Demo versions run the same mathematics as the real-money version, so they show trigger frequency and pacing accurately. What they cannot show is the part that determines outcomes with real money: stake size and session length, both of which are consequence-free in a demo.

Reading a good demo session as a forecast is the most common mistake with free play. It is a sample, not an expectation.
