Safer gambling: limits, GAMSTOP and where to get help

This page is here because the tools work, and because the most important thing about them — what they do not cover — is rarely stated plainly.

GAMSTOP: one registration, every licensed site

GAMSTOP is free and national. One registration blocks access to every gambling site licensed by the Commission, for six months, one year or five years. Every licensed operator is required to integrate with it, which is why it works across sites rather than one at a time.

What it does not cover: unlicensed offshore sites, betting shops and land-based casinos, and the National Lottery. The first of those is the important one — an unlicensed site is not connected to the scheme and will accept a registration that every licensed site refuses.

That is the most practical reason the licence question is not a technicality.

It cannot be cancelled early. The period chosen runs its full length, and afterwards it does not lapse on its own: removal is an active step with a cooling-off period built in.

Deposit limits are per operator here

This differs sharply from some other markets and catches people out. In Britain a deposit limit is set with an individual operator and applies there only. Setting one at a site does not restrict deposits at another.

Germany, by contrast, runs a statutory cross-operator limit of €1,000 a month through a central system. Neither approach is obviously better, but assuming the German model applies in Britain leads to a false sense of a ceiling that does not exist.

The practical implication: a limit is worth setting at every operator where an account exists, not just the main one.

Reality checks and time-outs

A reality check interrupts play at a set interval with a summary of time and money. Every licensed operator offers them, and they are the least intrusive of the available tools.

A time-out is a short break — 24 hours up to six weeks — at a single operator. It is the right instrument when GAMSTOP feels too final and a limit feels too weak.

Plus, since October 2021: no autoplay on slots, a minimum spin duration of 2.5 seconds, and no sounds or animations that present a return smaller than the stake as a win.

These are not features. They are constraints on the product, and they exist because the previous design pushed in the opposite direction.

What the tools do not do

Each of the tools has a boundary, and knowing where it sits matters more than knowing the tool exists. GAMSTOP covers operators licensed in Britain, and only those — unlicensed offshore sites, land-based venues and the National Lottery sit outside it entirely. A deposit limit binds one operator, so an account elsewhere is unaffected. A reality check interrupts and nothing more; it does not stop a session or restrict a stake.

None of this makes them weak. It means a single tool is rarely the whole answer, and the combination is what closes the gaps.

Signs that are easier to see in an account than in a mood

Two patterns show up in transaction history before they show up in how a session feels: deposits made shortly after a loss, and deposit limits raised more than once in a month. Both are visible in an operator’s own account history, and both are worth looking at precisely because they are records rather than impressions.
