Deposit limits, reality checks and GAMSTOP: what each covers
Checked 30 Jul 2026
Britain has four safer-gambling tools that work at different scales, and the differences between them matter more than the individual descriptions.
Deposit limits are per operator — this catches people out
A deposit limit set at one operator applies at that operator only. There is no central UK register of limits, and setting one at a main site does nothing about an account elsewhere.
This differs sharply from Germany, where a €1,000 monthly limit is enforced across every licensed operator through a central system. Assuming the German model applies in Britain produces a false sense of a ceiling that does not exist.
Practical consequence: a limit is worth setting at every operator where an account exists, not just the main one. And reductions take effect immediately, while increases require a cooling-off period — an asymmetry that is entirely deliberate.
Reality checks: the least intrusive tool
A periodic interruption showing time and money spent in the current session. Every licensed operator offers them and they are usually configurable, commonly from 15 minutes upward.
They are easy to dismiss and still worth having, because the specific failure mode they address is losing track of time rather than losing track of money.
Time-outs: a short break, one operator
A defined break at a single operator, typically 24 hours to six weeks, during which the account is inaccessible. It sits between a limit and full self-exclusion and is the right instrument when GAMSTOP feels too final.
GAMSTOP: everything licensed, at once
Free, national, and mandatory for every licensed operator to integrate with. One registration blocks access to all of them for six months, one year or five years.
What it does not cover: unlicensed offshore sites, betting shops and land-based casinos, and the National Lottery. The first is the important gap — an unlicensed site is not connected to the scheme and will accept a registration every licensed site refuses.
That gap is the most practical argument for the licence question being more than a technicality.
It cannot be cancelled early. The chosen period runs its full length, and afterwards it does not lapse automatically: removal is an active step with a further cooling-off period.
Choosing between them
Limits for routine control. Reality checks for awareness during a session. A time-out for a break. GAMSTOP when the decision is to stop.
They are not alternatives to each other, and using more than one is normal. Independent help is available from GamCare on 0808 8020 133, free and confidential, and from BeGambleAware.
The gap between the four tools
Read together, the four tools cover different axes and leave a specific hole. Deposit limits bind one operator and one direction of money. Reality checks interrupt but do not restrict. Time-outs stop one account briefly. GAMSTOP stops every licensed account at once, for a minimum of six months.
What none of them covers is the space between a single-operator limit and a total exclusion. A player who wants an overall monthly ceiling across every site they use cannot set one in Britain, because no cross-operator limit exists — a contrast with Germany, where a thousand-euro monthly cap applies across all licensed operators through a central system.
What to set on day one
The tools are all easier to use before they are needed. A deposit limit set at registration takes effect immediately; raised later, it takes effect only after a cooling-off period, which is the point of the asymmetry. A reality check set at thirty minutes costs nothing and answers the question most players get wrong, which is how long they have been playing.
Setting both at the start is not a statement about self-control. It is the only moment when the decision is being made calmly.
Frequently asked
Does Britain have a cross-operator deposit limit?
No. Deposit limits are set per operator and apply only there. This differs from Germany, where a €1,000 monthly limit is enforced centrally across all operators.
What does GAMSTOP cover?
Every UKGC-licensed remote gambling site, all at once, for six months, one year or five years. It does not cover unlicensed sites, land-based venues or the National Lottery.
Can I lower a deposit limit immediately?
Yes. Reductions take effect immediately at every licensed operator. Increases require a cooling-off period.
What is a reality check?
A periodic interruption showing time and money spent in the current session. Every licensed operator offers them, and they are the least intrusive of the tools.
Which tool should I use?
Limits for routine control, reality checks for awareness, a time-out for a short break at one operator, GAMSTOP when the decision is to stop across all of them.
